The population of the Island is approximately 8,000.

English is the official Language. Spanish and Creole (Belizean dialect) are widely spoken.

Ambergris Caye is hot and sunny year round. June is considered the rainy month and may also rain is September.

Dress code-beachwear-The Island is very informal. Only if you will attend special function, a more casual dress will be more appropriate.

What Language Is spoken on the Island?
Belize's official language is English, and the locals on the island speak both English and Spanish. Creole (a broken-English dialect) is also widely spoken.

What is the climate like?
The climate on the island, as well as the rest of Belize, is sub-tropical. This means that you can expect the average temperature to be in the mid 80s. The water temperature is ranges from 79-83 degrees Fahrenheit. Belize does not have four main seasons, but its weather is divided into the Dry and Rainy Seasons. The Dry Season is usually experienced from November through May, while the Rainy Season typically lasts from June to November.

What is the Currency Exchange Rate?
The exchange rate is currently $1 US = $2 BZ, very easy to calculate. US currency is accepted by most businesses.

What are the local business/shopping hours?
Most places open for business at 8 a.m., close for lunch at midday, reopen at 1 p.m., then close for the day at 5 p.m. Of course, there are exceptions. It is important to note that Banks close every day on the Island at 1:30 p.m., though remain open until 4:30 p.m. on Fridays.

What sort of taxes can I expect?
Belize has an 8% sales tax which is applied to all products and services. Hotels have a 7% tax on room rates. When you leave the country, you will need to pay a departure tax of $22.50 Belize Dollars, that's $11.25 US Dollars. A portion of the departure tax goes towards an environmental organization (Protected Areas Conservation Trust, PACT).

What is the main means of transportation?
Since the island is almost devoid of asphalt, the preferred means of transportation is via golf cart. Golf carts can be rented with your valid driver's license. Most everything on the Island is within walking distance, so you can also shed your shoes and stroll through the colorful town towards your destination.

What activities can be enjoyed on the Island?
Ambergris Caye is fringed to the East by Belize's outstanding Barrier Reef, making diving and snorkeling popular past times. Other water sports include para-sailing, jet skiing and fishing. Other activities include bird watching, beach combing, and of course, relaxing on the white sandy beaches, soaking up the Caribbean rays. The town of San Pedro is known for it's first class restaurants and entertaining nightlife, so whether day or night, you'll always have something interesting to do, places to explore, great food to enjoy.
