There
are areas off Ambergris Caye, where turquoise waters and an abundance
of wildlife makes for excellent snorkeling.
The reef crest offers several
sites for non-divers who also want a glimpse of the underwater world.
The majority of the dive centers offer trip to different snorkel
sites. These usually depart daily at 9:00 am and 2 pm. One of the
most popular snorkel trips, is the combination of the Hol Chan Marine
Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. Hol Chan is a sanctuary and therefore
there is quite an abundance of marine life at all times. Other favorite
snorkel areas are Coral Gardens, Tuffy cuts, Tres Cocos, and Mexico
Rocks.
Hol Chan Marine Reserve:
These
protected waters were designated as a marine sanctuary in 1987.
"Hol Chan" is Maya for "Little Channel," so
called because of a natural cut through the reef. The reserve is
located about 4 miles South of Ambergris Caye, and covers three
square miles.
Hol Chan is divided into 4
zones: Reef, Seagrass, Mangroves, & Shark Ray Alley.
Shark Ray Alley is quickly
becoming a popular snorkeling destination, for those who like to
get up close and personal with the marine life - primarily nurse
sharks and southern sting rays. Remember that although passive,
these are wild creatures and they have teeth and stingers. Do not
aggrivate them. As well as the friendly sharks and rays, there is
an abundance of other fish species such as groupers, snappers, jacks,
parrotfish, eels, lobsters and other crustaceans. The Alley is only
a 15 minute boat ride from Ambergris Caye. The area is teeming with
an abundance of marine life, including baracudas, rays and colorful
angel and parrot fish.
